The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea. It includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller ones, such as Mona, Culebra, and Vieques.

The 3,500 sq mile island took a direct hit from Hurricane Maria on September 20th with the exceptionally damaging eye of the Cat 5 storm diagonally crossing the island creating a very wide area of damage and destruction.

Puerto rico is the largest island to be impacted by the storms. With a population of 3.4 million people and significant damage to a previously weakening infrastructure the management of the aftermath has been complex and often much slower than anticipated. As a United States Territory the island has the ability to achieve aid and resources from the U.S. however this has been complicated by bureaucracy and politics.
